General information

The cytotrophoblast is the inner layer of the trophoblast and the part of the trophoblast that retains its cellular structure and does not invade the maternal tissues. It forms the outer surface of the chorion. The trophoblast splits into the cytotrophoblast and the syncytiotrophoblast.
