General information

  • Three FST isoforms (FST288, FST303, and FST315) are produced from the Fst gene that are primarily secreted proteins. [1]
  • Follistatin regulates enamel patterning in mouse incisors by asymmetrically inhibiting BMP signaling and ameloblast differentiation. [2]
  • Among the FST isoforms, FST315 is secreted fastest and FST288 is secreted more slowly, with some remaining intracellular. [1]
  • Binds directly to activin and functions as an activin antagonist. [3]

  • Follistatin is produced in the gonadotrope and folliculostellate cells of the pituitary gland and is thought to indirectly regulate FSH biosynthesis and secretion through its ability to bind activin. [4]
