General information

  • Human beta-MSH(1-22) was first isolated from human pituitary as a 22-amino acid (aa) peptide derived from a precursor protein, POMC. [1]
  • Melanotropin is a peptide having several functions, including the stimulation of melanogenesis and the modulation of proliferation of melanocytes and melanoma cells. It acts through binding to high-affinity receptors of the melanocortin-1 subtype, exclusively expressed in cells of the melanocytic lineage. [2]
  • Melanotropins (MSH) are involved in tanning by stimulating melanocytes via the activation of the melanocortin-1 receptor to melanin production [3]
  • Bertagna et al. demonstrated that human beta-MSH(5-22) is a true endogenous peptide produced in human hypothalamus. [1]
