General information

  • Precursor form: cell membrane, mature form: secreted protein, mature HB-EGF is released into the extracellular space and probably binds to a receptor. [1]
  • Both an increase in intracellular calcium and activation of PKC lead to activation of an extracellular metalloproteinase that acts on the membrane bound precursors of EGF-receptor ligands including HB-EGF, amphiregulin and TGF-alpha. [2]
  • Gastrin acts via shedding of HB-EGF to stimulate proliferation, and may also stimulate HB-EGF gene expression. [2]
