General information

  • CTAP-III and NAP-2 are both derived from a common precursor, platelet basic protein, which is stored in the alpha-granules of platelets and released upon their activation. CTAP-III is an 85-residue peptide which is converted to NAP-2 by enzymic removal of the 15 amino-terminal residues. [1]
  • During early inflammation, the chemoattractants neutrophil-activating peptide-2 (NAP-2), platelet-activating factor (PAF), and complement component C5a are rapidly generated within the vasculature and potently induce effector functions in neutrophils, such as chemotaxis and degranulation. [2]
  • NAP-2, NAP-2(73), NAP-2(74), NAP-2(1-66), and most potent NAP-2(1-63) are chemoattractants and activators for neutrophils. [3]
  • The chemoattraction of neutrophils about monocytes is mediated by the generation of NAP-2. [4]
