General information

  • Inhibitor of osteogenesis, acts by an activin-mediated pathway to oppose BMP-2 actions. Does not prevent BMP-2 binding to its receptors. [1]
  • Negatively regulates bone density. Antagonizes the ability of certain osteogenic BMPs to induce osteoprogenitor differentitation and ossification. [2]
  • Induces cartilage and bone formation.
  • Forms heterodimers with Nodal proteins, resulting in mutual inhibition. [3]
  • GREMLIN and DANTE are secreted antagonists for BMPs and SLITs. [4]
  • Expressed in adult and fetal cartilage. Highly expressed in fracture tissue, particularly in osteoblasts, osteoclasts and chondroblasts. [2]
