Details for messenger / hormone: betacellulin

EndoNet ID: ENH00442

To link to the content of EndoNet use the EndoNet ID that is given on the detail pages in the format ENX0000, where X is a place holder for the type of the component (e. g. R for receptor or C for anatomical structure).
As URL for the linking append this ID to the detail page for this type of component.
For an hormone that would be:

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/hormone/ENH00000

It is also possible to use the search of EndoNet to link to the right detail page. The URL should look like

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/search/ENC00000
If the search pattern is unambigious the user is directed to the corresponding detail page.

General information

  • Betacellulin is a member of the EGF family; it efficiently activates all 4 members of the ErbB receptor family, and it binds to EGFR with an affinity similar to that of EGF. [1]
  • BTC could be a strong angiogenic factor because it induces cell survival, DNA synthesis, migration, and tubule formation in endothelial cells. [1]
  • The -226A/G polymorphism of the BTC gene may contribute to the development of diabetes. [2]
  • Betacellulin belongs to the family of epidermal growth factor-like growth factors that are expressed as transmembrane precursors and undergo proteolytic ectodomain shedding to release a soluble mature growth factor. [3]
  • Betacellulin induces angiogenesis through activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase and phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase in endothelial cell. [4]
