General information

  • Thrombospondins are astrocyte-secreted proteins that promote CNS synaptogenesis. [1]
  • Thrombospondin-1 inhibits endothelial cell responses to nitric oxide in a cGMP-dependent manner. [2]
  • Thrombospondin-1 is required for normal murine pulmonary homeostasis and its absence causes pneumonia. [3]
  • Thrombospondin, a 450-kD multifunctional glycoprotein with a broad tissue distribution, is secreted upon platelet stimulation, binds to the activated platelet surface, and supports platelet aggregation. [4]
  • Nitric oxide regulates angiogenesis through a functional switch involving thrombospondin-1. [5]
  • Thrombospondin-1 suppresses spontaneous tumor growth and inhibits activation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and mobilization of vascular endothelial growth factor. [6]
