General information

  • Apolipoprotein C-I induces apoptosis in human aortic smooth muscle cells via recruiting neutral sphingomyelinase. [1]
  • APOC-I binds the free fatty acid (FFA) in the circulation, thereby reducing the availability of FFA for uptake by cells. [2]
  • Mature human apolipoprotein C-I), comprising 57 amino acids, is the smallest member of the plasma apolipoprotein family. Amphipathic helical regions within apoC-I, common to this class of proteins, are mediators of lipid binding, a process that underlies the functional properties of apoC-I, including the capacity to activate the plasma enzyme LCAT, to disrupt apoE mediated receptor interactions and to inhibit cholesterol ester transfer protein.   • APOC-I is expressed in the liver and in macrophages, and has several roles in lipid metabolism. [4]
  • APOC-l increases atherosclerosis by inducing hyperlipidemia, but decreases macrophage lipid accumulation in vitro, its production by macrophages locally in the arterial wall does not affect atherosclerosis development in vivo. [4]
  • APOC-I is a direct inhibitor of the lipoprotein lipase activity independent of the very-low-density lipoprotein receptor and apolipoprotein C-3. [5]
