General information

  • Gal-8 constitutes a novel extracellular stimulus for T cells, able to bind specific beta1 integrins and to trigger signaling pathways conducive to cell spreading. [1]
  • Upon secretion galectin-8 acts as a physiological modulator of cell adhesion. When present in excess as a soluble ligand, galectin-8 (like fibronectin) forms a complex with integrins that negatively regulates cell adhesion. [2]
  • Galectin-8 modulates neutrophil function via interaction with integrin alphaM. [3]
  • Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors and JNK act as molecular switches, regulating the choice between growth arrest and apoptosis induced by galectin-8. [4]
  • Galectin-8 binding to integrins inhibits cell adhesion and induces apoptosis. [5]
  • Galectin-8 and galectin-9, which each consist of two carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs) joined by a linker peptide, belong to the tandem-repeat-type subclass of the galectin family. [6]
  • The isoform with the longest linker peptide, that is, galectin-8L (G8L), is highly susceptible to thrombin cleavage, whereas the predominant isoform, galectin-8M (G8M), was resistant to thrombin. [6]
