hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis

The serum levels of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 are tightly controlled by the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thyroid (HPT) axis that depends on the hypothalamus, the anterior pituitary, and the thyroid gland. Main function is the regulation of metabolism under physiological conditions.
