Details for receptor: ferroportin-1

EndoNet ID: ENR01004

To link to the content of EndoNet use the EndoNet ID that is given on the detail pages in the format ENX0000, where X is a place holder for the type of the component (e. g. R for receptor or C for anatomical structure).
As URL for the linking append this ID to the detail page for this type of component.
For an hormone that would be:

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/hormone/ENH00000

It is also possible to use the search of EndoNet to link to the right detail page. The URL should look like

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/search/ENC00000
If the search pattern is unambigious the user is directed to the corresponding detail page.

General information

  • Two metal transporters, the divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) and the ferroportin/Ireg1 were shown to be expressed in the basal membrane (of the placenta) and these might play a role in iron transport to the fetus. [1]
  • Iron export from enterocytes is mediated by ferroportin1 together with the ferrooxidase hephaestin, which oxidizes iron to its ferric state for transport in the serum bound to transferrin. [2]
  • Iron is stored in the liver in both hepatocytes and liver macrophages (Kupffer cells). Both cell types express ferroportin to release iron into the circulation and thus are potential targets for hepcidin. [2]

Binding hormones

  • hepcidin
    • Hepcidin binds to FPN1 to enhance FPN1 internalisation and degradation and thus diminishes iron release. [2]
    • FPN1 is expressed in macrophages, hepatocytes and intestinal enterocytes, hepcidin is expected to block iron export from these tissues. [2]
